Exercise #4

The experience I am going to talk about happened my sophomore year here at CU. Our basketball team was playing the Kansas Jayhawks. They were a top 10 team in the nation and we were looking for the upset. It was around noon and that morning was extremely cold and the snow was flurrying. Walking up the stadium and seeing the massive line, like I’ve never seen before, it was a surprise. Standing in that line was so cold, there were so many crazy fans dressed up in body paint. I couldn’t believe how they could stand in this weather! The atmosphere was the most electric I have ever been apart of at my time here at CU. It seemed like everyone in the student section was on the same page, there was going to be an upset! Walking into the stadium was a great relief, getting to the seats the place was packed 30 minuets before the game even begun. Due to the time of the game I wasn’t sure how drunk everyone was going to be, turns out the early start didn’t faze the students here at CU. So many drunk people that were all over the place, you had to dodge and weave around these folks. Halfway through the first half we were playing well and the crowd was going wild. The upset was definitely in the making. Then all of the sudden a girl in the row next to me and my friend threw up all over the ground. Everyone was so disgusted and she had to be escorted out of the stands. The smell was so pungent, I was upset that that had to happen right next to me. As the game went on we were leading the whole game, everyone was in such a good mood. The place was really rocking at this point. The emotions that were going on inside me I had never felt before at a sporting event. The dream upset I have always wanted was in reach. Then the drama happened, we were up by 5 points with 2 minuets to go, now in basketball it would hard to lose the game at this point. But Kansas outplayed us and it was tied with 3 seconds to go. The ruckus atmosphere had suddenly disappeared and everyone was on the edge of their seats. You could just feel that everyone thought if it went into overtime we were going to lose. Kansas had the momentum. It felt like you could hear a pin drop all of the sudden, when before it was like being at a concert. Then our star shooting guard gets the ball from the inbounds pass and chucks up a near half court shot. It looked good…. and it went in!!! I jumped from my seat, screaming like bloody murder in excitement and joy. I jumped into my friends arms, as I did this, the stampede was beginning… everyone was trying to rush the court. The ultimate thing to do for a sports fan. I quickly followed suit and started making my way through the jungle of students and chairs. I nearly sprained my ankle in the process slowing my progress to the court for a split second. If I would have stopped completely I could have been more seriously injured. That was so frightening. Being on the court was the greatest moment of my sports career. I was in a state of euphoria. Nothing will ever top it, unless the football team wins the National Championship. Being on the court was such a cool feeling, I ran into so many kids that I knew, which was interesting to me because there was like 3,000 students on the court. So awesome to share this experience with my friends and see everyone come together. Then after the game all I wanted to do was to go home and watch the next episode of sports center to see how the national media was going to talk about what we had just accomplished. I had a great sense of pride for being a CU Buff!

It is hard to remember everything that went on that day at the Coors Event Center, but it is possible that I left out some priori types of senses, the higher ordered sense according to Knight. Those that are associated with higher levels thinking and consciousness. Because this experience was such an intense emotional experience it is hard to exactly delve deep into what was going on in my mind during this event. My mind was on such a high that I’m sure I was experiencing things sub-consciously. I left out interactions that occurred with me and the people around me. I could have talked about the emotions and how that influenced what I was doing. Also, talking about what was happening with me during the course of the game.
